Every nation has some significant, memorable and red-letter day. As an independent country in the world, Bangladesh also has some memorable days. The history of the days is remembered and observed with due solemnity and great respect.
The 21st of February (Our International Mother Language Day) is a historic and memorable day. On this day the people of Bangladesh pay homage to the language martyrs. It is also a Red-letter day for the people of Bangladesh as well as the other nations. Everybody observes the day highlighting the significance of the day.
History of 21 February
The partition of India and Pakistan was held in 1947 by Great Britain. Two independent nations have emerged on the world map. It is noteworthy that Pakistan is divided into two regions.
The two regions are East Pakistan (present Bangladesh) and West Pakistan (Present Pakistan). The language of the two regions was different from one another. Most of the people of East Pakistan spoke in Bangla but the Majority of the people of West Pakistan spoke in Urdu. So, the Pakistan Government imposed Urdu as a state language. Bangla speaking people stood against this decision.

Many seminars and procession were held against this decision. As a result, In February 1952 the Pakistani Government imposed section 144 for the general people of Bangladesh.
The people of Bangladesh mainly students broke the section 144 and went on the procession. Pakistani police shot them in front of Dhaka Medical College. Many students along with Salam, Rafique, Jabbar and Shafiul had been killed during that time. As a result, Bangali people of all ages stood against the government.
They started a movement against the government policy also the government. At last, the government had to declare Bangla as the state language of East Pakistan.
After that, the day of 21 February is celebrated as “Basha Dibosh” in Bangladesh also Language Movement Day Or shaheed Dibosh. The day is a public holiday in Bangladesh. The movement of language is known as Bhasa Andolan in Bengali.
